Manchester city midfielder Yaya Touré has predicted that Manchester United will be knockout of the Champions League this season after suffering a 2-0 defeat against Olympiakos in the first leg of their last 16 tie. This was a very poor result for United, who managed just one shot on target throughout the entire 90 minutes. The second leg will be at home tonight. Old Trafford was the scene of an embarrassing 3-0 defeat against Liverpool on Sunday. Following this embarrassment, there have been several question marks raised about the future of David Moyes at the club.
There have been rumours that another embarrassing defeat – potentially against Olympiakos – could be the end of Moyes’ reign at United. Touré, whose city failed to get past Barcelona at the same stage, says that United will meet the same fate as his team. One of the reasons for his prediction is the current form of Olympiakos, which has been vastly superior to that of United. The Greek outfit have been immensely successful in their league over the last two decades. They have been continuing this form even after the loss of their star striker to Fulham in the January transfer window.
If United are knocked out tomorrow, then Chelsea could be the only remaining English team in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
“Olympiakos are having a great year, a good season. They can get past United. It will be a tough rematch in Manchester. I know United well and, although they are not at their best, they are a very experienced team. I back Olympiakos. If they work hard, they have the skill to do it. It would be a great success to achieve qualification,” said the midfielder, who has been in immense form this season. He scored the equaliser against Sunderland in the Capital One cup final.
